Emo Verkerk

Love me or leave me

This winter the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag is exhibiting around 90 of Emo Verkerk’s paintings and sculptures.

Among the most important artists working in the Netherlands in recent years, Verkerk began producing his weird and wonderful two- and three-dimensional works in 1978. Early in his career, he painted portraits in which form and colour took on a life of their own. Following his major 1988 retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, his work developed in leaps and bounds. Abandoning all normal concepts of portraiture, he adopted a highly individual approach that has resulted in a stream of disarming and joyous paintings and sculptures.

This winter’s exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue (published by Uitgeverij Komma/d’jonge Hond) containing reproductions of over 170 of his works, as well as three interviews exploring the relationship between painting and slapstick. In addition, letters to Adriaan van Dis offer an idiosyncratic perspective on the relationship between fauna and sculpture, while the position of the artist today is examined in depth in a scintillating and highly thought-provoking discussion between Luc Tuymans and Emo Verkerk.
