World-famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero will this summer exhibit his most important paintings and drawings in the Gemeentemuseum. Botero is one of the best-known artists in Latin America and produces highly distinctive paintings, pastels and sculptures. Common to all of them is the inflated volumes of his subjects’ bodies. This feature gives his work an exuberance and exaggeration that is sometimes comical and at times touching. He draws his inspiration both from the culture of South America and from his fondness for old masters like Velazquez and Uccello. It is more than 25 years since the last major exhibition of Botero’s work was held in the Netherlands.
