From Breitner to Egon Schiele and from Charley Toorop to Francis Bacon. This exhibition features a selection of top works from the collection of the Gemeentemuseum. Some of them, like Odilon Redon's Lemon and Red Pepper, have never in living memory been seen in such splendour. Following in-depth research, the picture was restored in the spring of 2000. A layer of grime was removed to reveal the freshness of the original colours.
The selection of top pieces also includes Large Locking Piece. Known to locals as 'the hollow tooth', this imposing Henry Moore sculpture dates from 1964 and has been on display in front of the museum ever since its purchase in the following year. This summer, however, it has moved to a temporary new location in the Lange Voorhout, as part of the annual open-air sculpture exhibition.
