Daniel Richter (b. 1962)

The weird figures in Daniel Richter’s painting Uwe, take the long and winding road form a baroque composition in which the artist alternates rapid, vigorous brushwork with a whole world of highly finished detail. Borrowing both from Christianity and from the history of Germany, Richter constructs contemporary, theatrical scenes in a manner strongly reminiscent of the tradition of apocalyptic Expressionism practised by artists like Jacoba van Heemskerck and Wassily Kandinsky. The combinations to be seen both in the brushwork and in the vivid palette create a truly sensational painting.
