Cézanne – Picasso – Mondrian Cézanne – Picasso – Mondrian
17/10/2009 - 24/1/2010
Cézanne is the ‘father of modern art’. Ironically, the painter who frequently found himself turned down for the Paris salons is now regarded as one of the most important artists of his day. Picasso and Mondrian followed the lead he set and the three of them were responsible for what is perhaps the most decisive development in all art history: the inception of abstract art. These three revolutionary artists are now the subject of a major international exhibition opening this autumn at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. The exhibits will reveal in spectacular fashion how advances in painting suddenly gathered pace around 1900. The result is a thrilling story that takes the viewer from the sumptuous palette of Cézanne via the brilliantly coloured – and sometimes humorous – paintings of Picasso to the extremely subtle compositions of Mondrian.
  Kandinsky & Der Blaue Reiter
6/2/2010 - 24/5/2010
In the early 20th century, a group of artists caused a huge furore in the Munich art world. Calling themselves Der Blaue Reiter, the artists produced expressive, brightly coloured, lyrical paintings which were to prompt the development of Expressionism in Germany. The core members of the group were Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky and kindred spirit Franz Marc. Although the group was so important for the later development of modern art, this exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in spring 2010 will be the first major retrospective of its work ever held in the Netherlands. Many of the works were seen earlier as part of the successful Kandinsky exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

  The Ouborg Prize 2009
31/10/2009 - 28/2/2010
The Ouborg Prize is awarded in alternate years to a Hague artist producing work of both national and local importance. Named after Hague artist Pieter Ouborg (1893-1956), the City of The Hague’s prize for the visual arts comprises a sum of € 10,000, an exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and a publication issued by Stroom Den Haag. The jury has awarded the Ouborg Prize 2009 to Justin Bennett (b. 1964), an off-beat sound artist who thrills the public time and again by producing fascinating compositions constructed of the everyday sounds of urban life.
Over the horizon Over the horizon
5/9/2009 - 7/2/2010
Brightly-coloured, atmospheric, wild, pleasant, flat, hilly, figurative, abstract, two and three dimensional: landscapes take all kinds of forms in modern art. From works packed with drama and emotion in the Romantic period to the abstract canvases of the 1960s, and the land artists, who used the physical landscape to create works of art. The exhibition Over the horizon shows how the portrayal of landscapes has changed over the last two centuries, and how these changes exemplify notions of art and the representation of reality in a particular era.
Delftsaardewerk.nl Delftsaardewerk.nl
14/11/2009 - 11/4/2010
The distinctive blue-and-white (or occasionally multi-coloured) tulip vases, jars, jugs, dishes and ornaments produced since the seventeenth-century in the Dutch town of Delft are a major national and international icon of Dutch culture and identity. This exhibition presents a three-dimensional version of the www.delftsaardewerk.nl website, an independent source of expert information to which the public will be able to make their own contributions.

Georges Vantongerloo Georges Vantongerloo
23/1/2010 - 16/5/2010
Like some latter-day Leonardo da Vinci, Georges Vantongerloo focused in his work on the relationship between the human body and the cosmos. In the art world there is much loose talk of achieving a synthesis between art and life, but Vantongerloo really meant it.
Steven Aalders Steven Aalders
30/1/2010 - 25/4/2010
Light is created by means of colour against a black, white or coloured ground. Steven Aalders (b. 1959) produces paintings that are simple in form but complex in their handling of colour. They are reminiscent of the work of De Stijl (in particular Mondrian) or of Minimal Art and it is this Modernist tradition that is most help in understanding Aalders’ work.
