Ghanaian Arts - alive and well visual arts/photography/Akan cultures/fashion
The artistic climate of Ghana is highly
unusual. The tercentenary of the start of
relations between the Netherlands and
Ghana is therefore being marked by the
Gemeentemuseum with a special event
focusing on the arts in Ghana. This will
encompass not only the traditional arts,
for example of the country's
Akan-speaking peoples, but also
contemporary painting and photography.
It will include a major fashion display
showing how African styles of dress have
influenced Western couturiers and vice
versa.
The exhibition will occupy the entire
basement floor, with the small display
areas surrounding the Fashion Gallery
being used to present magnificent
products of the Akan cultures: wooden
and earthenware sculptures, gold or
gilded objects, jewellery and textiles.
These items will be arranged under ten
themes relating to Ghanaian culture:
history, slavery, status and power,
language, ancestors, fertility, parades,
music, foreign influences, fashion and
hair styles.
