This Sunday afternoon at 2 pm, the Gemeentemuseum offers a short background talk.Come along and find out more about the exhibition Asian Art and Dutch Taste. A fascinating story of four centuries of Dutch-Asian intercourse.

Over the past 400 years, many people have travelled from the Netherlands to the Far East in search of gain and new opportunities. They encountered entirely unknown cultures. Among the lucrative trade goods they shipped to Europe were not only spices, coffee and tea, but also porcelain and exotic textiles. Their eye also fell on woodcarvings, ivory objets d’art, silverware and elegant weaponry, such as krisses. The objects they acquired or shipped to Europe were often the result of interaction between East and West. This exhibition examines all these material expressions of culture and what they tell us about the fascinating story of four centuries of trade between the Netherlands and Asia.
